3 cents worth of cucumber
May. 6th, 2008 01:51 amEarlier this evening I had a fight with my 2 year old over what was, essentially, 3 cents worth of cucumber. (They are 8 for a dollar at our fresh food market these days, and three or four slices would have made C happy.)
I guess it's another lesson in changing ones perspective, only I figured this one out a few hours too late.
I gave H and S some sliced cucumber with salad dressing. I made sure to include a plate for C with two slices so he wouldn't be left out. This wasn't good enough for him. He wanted several more slices, so he would have as much as the girls.
I refused, since I knew he wouldn't even eat much of the two slices I gave him. It is still too ingrained in me to not waste food.
I need to think of the cucumber as a tactile and creative experience for him, then I think I can take a deep breath and stop worrying about wasting 3 cents worth of cucumber. In fact, it wouldn't be a waste, it would be a very inexpensive learning experience for him.
