My goat looks dead when he sleeps fully on his side with his head on the ground.

Boy is well into his second week of working the grown-up job. Today they gave him work shirts, and on Monday he gets to go off-site.

I did flood-day for the first time in several months. On the one-hand, I love being surrounded by green, on the other, I'm dangerously close to declaring "I'm too old for this shit."

M and S are having a friendly competition writing/recording songs for FAWM (February Album Writing Month). S is winning.

H's boss had a stroke in December, she has been interim manager ever since.

At the end of October, H and I saw Singing in the Rain at our little theatre in the round.

It was fabulous. The male lead was really good. What they did with the staging was insane; they even managed to make it rain. During the show, I realized, I do enjoy dancing in my musicals. It's a good thing I brought H, instead of M, he doesn't enjoy the dancing.

I had always thought I'd seen the movie before, but only a little into the musical I realized it was only that trick of the mind where you're familiar with just enough of it to be sure you've seen it. I had that same experience with The Time Machine at a convention several years back. At the time, both M and I were certain we'd seen it before, but we were both fooled by its saturation into pop culture.

I had a few things to post about, that I hadn't quite gotten around to: goats bread, kittens, and such.

Then Charlie Kirk was assassinated.

Charlie Kirk was fucking assassinated.

He was 31, with a wife and 2 small children (1 year old son, 3 year old daughter).

This one hit harder than I expected. The human mind can't react to every tragedy, to every evil act, with the same intensity. We are wired for the life of a villager, not as a global citizen. We need a connection.

S used to go to one of his Anti-Socialist clubs when she first started going to the local community college. I remember navigating emails signed by him from the early days of TPU. I guess that was enough for my brain to consider a connection.

Charlie wasn't a politician, he was just a good guy who talked to kids on college campuses. Beyond the demonizing of him done by the mainstream media, the why to this was deafening.

Nick Freitas has the answer to the why.

Diesel encapsulates the rest with How Dare They.

Excuse me while I go cry some more while listening to that on loop.

Musicals.

I grew up watching musicals.

Live.

Mind you, they were usually seats so far back we sometimes used binoculars to better see the actors.

It was also an outdoor theatre, and my Mom always packed snacks and lemonade.

It was a very important part of my childhood, and I feel very grateful for having had that opportunity.

I have always wanted my kids to have the chance to grow up with musicals, like I did.

We've taken the kids to musicals, off and on, since they were each old enough to comport themselves appropriately, and when it seemed we wouldn't be wasting our money bringing them to something they wouldn't enjoy.

The whole family is hooked.

And now, since Hubby and I don't spend money on very many things, we've agreed to keep taking, the now grown kids, to musicals whenever possible.

Recently we found a little theatre in the round that does a really good job with musicals; casting lovely singers, decent actors, and doing an amazing job with their limited space.

Bonus points, the cost of tickets is lower than the other theatres we've been to.

Even better, they do mid-week, evening showings, which fits around both girls' work schedules. We haven't yet managed to drag the boy to this particular theatre, but in a few months, the whole family is going to see Anastasia the Musical. Possibly my second favorite Musical.

Also, because it is such a small theatre, there are no bad seats.

My Father-in-Law is in the hospital.

ICU.

M and the kids are driving up to see him.

As both girls reflected, for their present selves, a last minute trip, where they have zero notice to give to work, and Opa may still recover, is stressful and frustrating. But, if Opa passes, and they don't go, their future selves will never forgive them.

Family first.

Boy is off on his camping weekend.

The last couple of hours of packing were controlled chaos.

He didn't have to be too thorough on the food end, since this is an organized Amtgard event, and he bought the meal ticket.

He is, however, outfitted with coffee (with his new percolator), some canned soups, and a camp stove.

S is going out Saturday, and will depend on him for the camp stove and coffee; she didn't buy the meal ticket.

M and I have the place to ourselves until mid Sunday. Good thing I have a very needy kitten (Fireball) to fill up that empty nest void.

Cooking.

I am a solid cook. I have a repertoire of dishes that my family will generally enjoy, that can span a two week period with very little repetition.

I am not, however, a creative cook. I don't like to take chances, or try new recipes.

The boy, on the other hand. Damn.

This past couple of weeks he has been perfecting what has become known as his Hobbit curry. Neither the hubby, nor I, have gotten sick of being his guinea pigs.

C can make a reliable enough curry, that the last time M and I went out for Thai food, we both ordered noodle dishes.

Going forward I should get a nice break, at least for a little bit.

In the past month I had to get 2 kittens fixed; this included the extra complication of Magic Missile and his heart murmur. Both are doing splendidly now, thank goodness.

The girls and I got to see a production of Dear Evan Hansen. Fabulous. It likely puts it in my top five of stage musicals.

The family did our annual trek to Ren Faire. This was complicated by S's car breaking down on the way to our house. M and C rescued her, towed her car to our favorite mechanic, and got back in time for us to only lose out on about 2 hours of our fair going experience.

S's car, Dori, was declared deceased. So we went to clean in our tonight. Perhaps break was too optimistic, as there will be car shopping in our future.

We burned up most of a Saturday, but H found a car. 2012 (11 years newer than her truck), 97,000 miles (about 100,000 fewer miles than her truck), and a manual.

She's still driving Lizard (our little loaner truck), until M helps her sort out the insurance on Monday, but it's done.

If all goes as planned, the junk car folks will haul off the carcass of H's old truck on Monday.

One of M's coworkers is incredibly amused by our tendency to drive cars till their wheels fall off (I had that literally happen once). But, after spending a day car shopping, the reason is obvious; why would we want to go through that experience more often than strictly necessary.
crazychicknlady: (Default)
Turns out you can still feed 2 people for less than 20 bucks at In-n-Out.

H finally had to put her truck out to pasture, so we spent several hours cleaning in out (it's amazing how many quarters can be eaten by a truck seat).

Afterwards I bought her lunch.

Tomorrow M and I are taking her car shopping. She's still aiming for a stickshift, but is likely downgrading from a truck to a hatchback.

The boy went camping this weekend, and it just so happens that the campground is in a dead zone.

Do you remember what it was like before cellphones, smartphones, and easy texting?

When we would take off for somewhere and there was no way to contact the people who cared about us?

I've been spoiled, being able to contact each of my kids at the drop of a hat.

I think I've done pretty well with the unknown this weekend. I should know in a couple of hours if my son successfully found his way to his boffer friends, rather than being lost or stuck on the side of the road since Friday afternoon.

The girls have moved in together.

When this happened, boy requested a room change, into H's old room. Since the boy's old room is technically a den (no closet) and smaller than the requested bedroom, it seemed like a reasonable ask.

Hubby had been using H's old room as a recording studio for the past few years, so his buy in was necessary.

After a lot of sorting of stuff (stay here, go with girl, donate, trash), boy has his new bedroom and hubby has his new music room.

S's old room has a future as a guest bedroom, but is currently the depository for the rest of the things that need sorting.

Since the new music room is just a music room and no longer has to double as a guest room and a depository of extra stuff, we were able to set up the boy's keyboard.

For the past few days I have been able to enjoy piano sounds emanating from the music room. I am pleased with this development.

Started with a trip to the bank along with bringing the boy to Walmart to return a mouse and headset he bought last week and was not happy with.

Then a chance to snag M and go out for the boy's long overdue Birthday lunch. First try, sticker shock at a Mongolian stir-fry. That shifted us back to Bulgogi, since their lunch special price was better than the Mongolian stir-fry place, so no longer seemed as ridiculous to me. Turns out, the Bulgogi place had a "no public restroom" sign in the window, so we ended up at the giant ass pizza slice place instead (honestly, much more my speed). The three of us had pizza and soda for barely more than one of us would have cost at either of the other places.

We then went shoe shopping for the boy. A million years later he and M ended up with shoes.

On the way home we hit a Best Buy so the boy could get an upgraded headset. This took some serious dithering as well, but eventually we made it back home with a headset for the boy.

Social Boy.

So the boy has dived into the club scene. Well, the community college club scene. He's joined Coding, Chess, and ASL. The only thing keeping him out of D&D is a scheduling conflict with work. If he can convince them to add an additional event on Tuesday afternoons he'll be all in.

As of this week, he's back up to 3 work shifts a week (he'd had to cut back from 5 to 2, because of an overtaxed knee). He's taking Math at one campus (the one with all the club opportunities), and Welding at another.

In addition to all of that, he is assistant coach of his old Youth Boffer team (having aged out by turning 18), has joined his sister's D&D game, and runs his own D&D campaign with some homeschooling friends.

If his knee keeps improving, in spite of his increasingly busy schedule, he'll likely add back in the Boffer involving bows and spells (so more like a LARP) on at least the occasional Saturday.

I'm down to one kid living at home this week. S is in the process of moving out, and while she has a ton more cleaning and moving to do, to be actually finished with the process, the plan, this week, is for her to stay at the new place till Friday. She finally has the "grown up" job, and needs to live closer to work.

While I expected to feel sad about this development, at the moment I'm mostly just relieved that I can plan dinners with zero regards to what she would like to eat. At least till Friday.

Then again, for a very long time, Mondays have been her late days, and I'm not used to having her around till at least 10pm.
crazychicknlady: (Default)
I've been up since about 2am. Then I had maybe an hour nap around noon. I'd blame insomnia, but it's more likely the boy's new work schedule coupled with a 5am flood day.

Today was definitely a don't want to do sh*t sort of day. I felt a little more energetic after a nap. My sleep schedule has been on the erratic side since C quit his job, and no longer needs to get up stupid early in the morning five times a week.

Progress.

So it's looking like S has gotten her first grown-up job. She's been background checked, had to pee in a cup, and has orientation on Tuesday. It's not quite welding, since they wanted their welders to have a few years experience. It is, however, in an air-conditioned shop, second shift, 4 tens, 20 minutes from here, and more than she's being paid at DQ.

Word of advice to aspiring young mechanical technicians: when attending a job fair, choose something other than a halter top and cutoff shorts to wear.
