New Horse.

So, my daughter's friend's soon to be ex-landlord is moving out of state and can't take her horse with her.

After exhausting all other options, they asked if I could take her.

I had thought I'd be done with horses after Ezra aged out, but I couldn't stand the idea that this horse's only other option was being put down.

Thus, enters Maggie into our lives. Our best animals are the ones who find us, after all. She is a 24 year old quarter horse, who may just be more buddy sour than Ezra, which is an impressive feat.

We have a septic system. We also have flood irrigation. Going in we thought we had a leach field that spread out into the lower area of our irrigated land. As it turns out, we, instead, have a thirty foot dry well leach pit, with an approximate diameter of five feet. It was recently recommended that we build up the area around the well to keep the flood irrigation from aggravating it's functionality every two weeks.

Advice about 12 years overdue.

We had 10 tons of dirt delivered today.

Halfway through spreading it, the thoroughbred demonstrated his affinity for dirt.

Very helpful boy.

Standing outside in the cold watching Junior barely eat a little grass because he has colic. Again. I'm running on same protocols as last time, so, knock on wood, he works his way through this in a few days.

I can't believe we are already more than 6 weeks into this whole mess. My nervous energy productivity has shifted into resigned to the new normal laziness. None the less, I still managed to unload three bales of hay and 10 bags of feed before S needed the truck to get to work this morning. I also dewormed the horses and scrubbed out and refilled their waters and most of the bird waters.

Now: I'm watching reruns of Quantum Leap while the cat cuddles with my legs, Hubby is participating in a virtual filk from an Ontario Convention, S is playing Minecraft with some of her homeschool buddies, and C is playing TF2.

Time to walk Pete.

I had an oddly satisfying day of social isolation today.

I chatted with H on the phone for 20 minutes.

I called to check on a friend from out of state and even though the conversation had to be brief, she sounded cheerful.

With the use of technology, S and C from our house, H from her apartment, and the 2 other members of their Saturday D&D group from their house, played a reasonably fun installment of their D&D campaign together.

M and I took Pete on a long walk. I've been playing PokémonGO again, since the quarantine started, so we walked down to a pokéstop in our neighborhood. It was a longer walk than I usually take him on, so poor Pete was really worn out by the time we got back.

Since Consonance was supposed to be this weekend, and old filkers tend to be reasonably tech savvy, they managed to live stream several concerts performed on many different livingroom couches. I got to listen from the comfort of my bed full of heatpads.

Interspersed through most of my day, I used the magic of iheartradio to stream an oldies country station out of Houston. Oh yeah, R.I.P. Kenny Rodgers; throughout the day that radio station was playing a tribute to him followed by a different one of his songs each time.

We also ended up having to bury a duck today. The one C started calling Spackle, because while she was supposed to be a brown duck she grew a very large number of white feathers instead. C and S chose rocks to put on her grave. They were trying to make them look like a runner duck.

Earlier in the day, I freshened up the hay in the chicken laying boxes and started on the insurmountable task of cleaning up the horse poop in the yard. Weird thing, someone threw a large bag of trash in our garage can. I wouldn't have minded if it was last garbage cycle, my container was nearly empty then, but I really needed the extra space this time around.

After coming back in from my evening animal stuff, I discovered M in the midst of a virtual filk circle with more than 40 participants. Oh, I didn't mention that Consonance is a filk Convention.

The ferrier came today, and since it was the trim before Christmas I had him trim Junior too. My thought process, even though Junior barely ever needs a trim, was I was handing the ferrier the same wad of cash (Christmas bonus time) regardless of how many of my horses he worked on so I might as well have him do them all. Plus, it's finally nice enough to start riding again and freshly trimmed hooves are easier to pick.

As my loyal readers may remember, last summer I mysteriously injured my back or hip in a way that caused a lot of problems with my left leg. It still isn't 100%, but this is the first time in over a year my leg felt good enough to ride.

I took a turn, then C had a ride. C managed a canter several times, and was very pleased with the whole affair.

The other day, all the kids had a go at riding Junior. We left Ezra out to follow along so he wouldn't freak out and run himself till he was drenched in sweat, like he did the day before.

S, riding for the first time in a long time, sporting her tiny steampunk hat.

C.

The neon ball thrower was being used as a spacer, to convince Ezra to back off a bit if he got too close. All in all a successful experience.

C had a great day, yesterday. At S's teen park day he managed to find a perfect slope for trying out his Christmas present from H - an old skateboard of hers. He quickly mastered staying on the whole way down while standing and crouching. He even went down once laying on his back - a trick he said he learned from one of the skater computer games he likes to play. C let me and S have a go before we left. S crashed on her second try and was done, but after I successfully made it down, she decided she would go again so she could defeat the hill.

Later C, H, and I went for a walk/ride. C rode on Junior, and H and I walked on our own two feet. C made Junior canter for several long stretches. Near the end of the ride, C was sore enough to be done, so H took a turn on Junior.

H.

I'm glad she did something fun, since she had a rough morning. She took her first stab at the driving test, and was defeated by the three point turn before she could even leave the parking lot. They had some weird cone set up we weren't expecting, thus H had no experience navigating. We had her practice 3 point turns on the road in real world situations, not in a freaking cone maze.

After dinner, M took C with him to a local park to Poké hunt. They defeated several gyms (C's favorite part of the game) and C caught enough Exeggcutes (thanks to the special event for Valentine's) to evolve two Exeggutor.

A couple of hours before bed I helped C get into a new game - Naruto online. Last I heard he had Shikamaru in his group - he came out of a card, but isn't very strong yet.

ETA: Good thing yesterday was such a good day; today, C and I have come down sick.

We got Wobbles from the neighbor on the day he was hatched. He lived in the house with Speedy, his hatchmate, till they were 3 weeks old. They were pretty huge by then, and I was overwhelmed with the work of moving and managing two houses, so moving them out seemed like the best idea at the time. I think I broke their hearts a little bit when I did and I've regreted that decision for the past 6 and a half years. H spent a ton of time with them, laying on the grass with them sleeping on her, and as a result Wobbles fell in love with her. To this day he will follow her around, honking in a soft special honk. As the other two kids aged and got as tall as H was when we got the geese, Wobbles added them to his list of prefered humans (whereas, when my son was 4, Wobbles was really vicious with him, biting at any opportunity). As for me, even though I am the one who feeds and waters him everyday, I will forever be known as the evil egg stealer.

Within a week of putting the geese in the yard, we got Ezra, our first horse. He was without a herd, and the geese were at an impressionable age, so somehow the giant thoroughbred, and the scrawny young geese bonded.

We're pretty sure in Wobbles mind he is half goose, half human, and half horse (and I know that is too many halves, but he is a rather mixed up goose, so he needs an extra half mixed in).

H, C, and I each took a turn at riding junior today.

C actually took several turns. He was having a particularly fun time riding, because on one of his runs towards the hay pen, Junior decided to canter for C. As C told me afterwards, "Junior decided to level me up."

C can now consistently canter Junior, as long as he has him pointed at the horse pens.

RIP - Soft Spot, C's Blue runner duck.

RIP - Castiel, my Black runner duck.

Found both birds today. Neither were next to a border fence (thus ruling out neighbor dogs). Soft Spot was intact, in the area the horses can access, so at first I thought she might have been accidentally kicked or stepped on. That was until I did a headcount of the remaining ducks and found Cas. She was on a lower level of the bird yard, missing her head and neck. So, it looks like for the first time in the five and a half years we've been at this property, we have a predator problem.

As sad as it is to lose birds, what bothers me the most is I don't know that whatever did this won't keep coming back. We do not have predator proof pens to lock the birds in at night.

It's been a tough couple of weeks, most of the details of which I will not got into here. The one aspect I will mention is the kids are sick. This seems to be a whopper of an illness, too, so I expect a couple more weeks of sick kids before they work it out of their systems. We're talking missing karate class sick.

In the meantime, I do realize I have been woefully neglecting my livejournal of late. So to get back into the swing of things posting wise, and to tide you over until more of my emotional energy returns, I give you Lazy Ass Horse:

About a month ago I let the horses out on the grass. Ezra proceeded to roll on the grass, as is often his way. The difference being, this time he didn't get back up right away. Instead, he started nibbling on the grass while still laying down. Thus giving me time enough to snap the above photo.

A few months back, I realized one of the reasons I hadn't been riding as much, is getting our thoroughbred ready to ride is a colossal pain in the butt. Well, I already knew that was why I wasn't riding as much, but the real breakthrough was understanding that it was okay to just ride Junior instead. Junior, who does not have thoroughbred withers. Junior who is just fat enough to have a nice round shape perfect for bareback. Junior, who once I catch him, generally acts like a well trained cooperative animal. I did not have to take the harder route, just because it was there.

I have gone on several, very enjoyable rides since.

I'm cutting it fairly close with this list. I was rather worn out all day, since I got up early for the farrier and also spent about an hour working outside in our still too annoyingly hot even though it's September weather.

1. A used clothing store near enough to shop at, and kids who seem to be absorbing my frugal ways.

2. My little beat up silver radio.

3. Chicken on sale at the grocery store so I know what I'm making for dinner tomorrow.

4. A chance to meet some new homeschoolers tomorrow (the first meeting of the year for a new teen/tween group we are trying out) - I'm especially grateful for the relief my middle child feels about getting to be around kids she won't have to try to explain homeschooling to.

5. Cup Ramen.
