Ride after a long break.
Aug. 1st, 2010 10:46 pmI rode Ezra today (first time in over a month). He was a handful, but not in the way I would have expected. I figured he'd want to run, and he did when I let him onto an empty field near our house, but mostly we spent the first 1/2 mile of our ride with me having to struggle with him to get him to move forward. He did not want to move up the road. He tried to turn and bolt twice, but I shut him down fast, so after that he just started to refuse to move. He even started backing (something I have trouble getting him to do when asked) rather than go forward. I mainly kept circling him, then pointing him back down the road - wash rinse repeat. It took us four times as long to get to the end of the road as it took us to walk back home.
Of course, thoroughbreds are not good weekend warrior horses, so hopefully he'll be better behaved once it cools off enough to ride more often.
H really wants to get another horse, so she has one she can ride without being led around. I told her there was no point in getting another horse while it was still too hot to ride it, but hopefully once it cools off we can go shopping for a horse for the kids.
