Daisy Chicken Died.
Sep. 6th, 2011 03:39 pmIt didn't come as a huge surprise. She's been acting poorly for the past week. She moved slower, couldn't get into the hen house to roost at night and was weak on one side.
Still, for the past two days she seemed to be doing a little better - though she would still get her feet tangled and fall over and couldn't make in up to roost. I was making sure to get her food and water right near her, and in the mornings, and during yesterday's overcast (thus, when it wasn't so dang blasted hot) she was moving around on her own. She even made it over to a pile of horse poop yesterday morning, though she had to lay down while she dined on that chicken delicacy.
Well, today I had to dig that deep hole. I'm putting her in the front, under my future new lemon tree.

Daisy the Americana, RIP.
I really liked Daisy. She was one of our oldest - we got her along with Lantana, Tiger Lily, and Rose (aka Dr Who, our first rooster) in fall 2006. Daisy started out as S's chicken. Then she gave her back to me, to be a spare, when we got two new chicks in 2007. Then we gave her to C when Tiger Lily died in 2008. Then C gave her back to me when we got new chicks in 2010. For the kids, new chicks were always more appealing than grown birds.
Daisy was one of our calmest birds. She would squat down when I got close and let me pet her. She was a little more skittish this last year. It probably didn't help that Speedy (the female goose) would chase her and peck her sometimes - Daisy would squat to appease her, but then Speedy would just peck her more, sigh.
I'm tired to burying birds. I loved Daisy. We had her for almost 5 years. I'll miss her.
