Two takes on Variables.
Jan. 19th, 2012 11:46 amThe other day M was trying to explain to S why e is a number (This came up thanks to a Simpson's episode which was "brought to you by the number e, not the letter e, the number..."). M covered an explanation of variables while working his way up to e.
S(9yrs) was generally overwhelmed and confused by the discussion, and thought that representing numbers with letters was coo-coo.
C(5yrs), on the other hand, embraced the concept of variables with great enthusiasm.
He told me that writing numbers was much easier when all he had to do was write them this way...
C told me each X in the above picture equal 5. On another page he made them all equal 100 each.
