The other night H, C and I were checking the chicken warmed goose eggs. The flashlight was so poor, that it looked like the eggs had gone bad. We couldn't see anything besides the light area of the air pocket, and everything else was dark. For a few horrible seconds I actually considered just tossing them. Luckily calm reason won out, and I decided to put the eggs back under their chickens and check online to see what goose eggs about their age should look like.

I ended up looking at the eggs again more carefully with the same light, then I asked M for a stronger light. That did the trick. Not only could we see veins and blobs that might be baby geese, one of the blobs looked like it had a head and a beak and it moved.

C told me he never completely gave up hope that the eggs were still alive. He sang me a little song about it once we saw the babies with the better light.

"I still had a little hope in my heart."
"Now there is hope in my heart and all around my heart,
now that I know they are alive."
