We just got back yesterday from a long weekend at a Con. It has been several years (certainly since before we moved into our current house) since I have gone further than a local Con. We had one of the 4-H teens watch the animals for us, so I could drag myself away for a whole three nights. All animals were present and accounted for when we returned.

The Con was lots of fun, and I'll probably post more as I think about it. One thing, since ConChord is a Filk Con, there was lots of music. At the one shots (an hour concert of different people getting up on stage to sing one song) on Saturday, H and I sang "The Least of My Kind" by Echo's Children; I played my new bodhran and H played a drum M had gotten me as a present. Then a few singers later, M and I sang a duet of "Listen to Me" by the Duras Sisters (with M's chord arrangement).

At this point in the weekend, S was off visiting with Grandparents and cousins, but C was with us at the Con. He was too tired to be pleasant to his sister and cousins, so we'd brought him back with us. The thing is, at the Con he was fine. He quietly and calmly drew pictures while H, M, and I were busy singing. Then, at the end of the one shots, when there was extra time, and the MC was asking for any more singers, C volunteered. He got up on stage and sang his "Dragons don't have to be Evil" song, improvising some along the way.

I talked with Tim Griffin (the MC) the next morning and he told me how impressed he was. Not just with C coming up on stage and singing, but with how receptive and encouraging the crowd was. He said in other venues he had experienced, if a little kid had said he wanted to sing, the adults would have told him he wasn't ready and stopped him from participating.
