S participated in a karate tournament today, to get a feel for it and see if it would be something she would like to do again. It was poorly organized chaos, and S didn't do very well in her areas, but she had fun anyway.

She did not place in Forms (I think there were two kids who did worse than she did), so was counted as a participant. She got second in Sparring (but that was like H getting 2nd in Field in the County 4-H Archery Contest she participated in two weeks ago - there were only two kids in her age category), and second (out of 3 kids) in Foam Sword fighting. She ended up with a huge ass trophy (all preregistered participants got one - or a plaque if they preferred), a goofy looking karate chicken statue we started calling 2nd place chicken, and a medal.

tournament 325
S did Chun Ji, the Gold belt form they teach at her gym. There were three judges who wrote down number scores to be announced right after each child finished their form. I think S got 4, 4, 5. She forgot the yell in the middle of her form, and when she realized it she faltered in her routine.

tournament 347
They competed to 5 points in sparring. S (in white) did manage to land at least one hit, but her opponent had a fast jab, and nailed S right on the face-guard more than once.

tournament 361
S (black helmet) did have reach on the opponent she beat in foam sword.

tournament 368
S vs O (a girl from our gym). S kept over balancing and going in too low.

S didn't participate in the weapons - basically forms with weapons (fancy pretty movement, not self defense related to weapons). There was a girl there, however, who kicked butt. When she was warming up she did a back handspring. I thought, "Wow, she can do gymnastics stuff." When she did her weapons form and incorporated the back handspring, I thought, "Wow, my sister should find a combo gymnastics/karate class for my niece when she gets tired of doing competitive gymnastics." When the girl did her intro, I thought I heard the last name of H's and my Sensei, but figured it was just a coincidence. M commented that I should figure out what gym she goes to. It turned out the Dad sat behind us and I asked him about her Gym. He responded that she just goes to the Rec Center at [the other place where H's and my Sensei does classes]; I excitedly told him we have that Sensei for the Kenpo/Jujitsu near where we live.

The girl swept weapons and forms (I really would have liked to see her kick butt at sparring, but the break elbows/close quarters/self defense style of my Sensei may not lend itself to sparring; still, I bet she would have been good at it, anyway). She beautifully demonstrated that S's Instructor (owner of the gym she goes to), doesn't know crap about how well someone can perform in a more practical applications karate.
