A while back my youngest turned 8 years old. He had his preferred form of sweet celebratory food - brownie decorated with frosting for a cake. When we celebrate a Birthday, these days, it's usually with just the immediate family (Mom, Dad, and the three kids). Sometimes we go out to dinner (though this year I made C one of his favorite meals I make - stirfry), and there is almost always a cake, or cupcakes, or (usually for C) a brownie cake.

And of course, presents.

M and I got C an expansion pack for Magic the Gathering (Earlier in that month, C and I had a conversation about him wanting some expansion packs - when I suggested he ask for some for his Birthday, he looked at me, quite seriously, and told me he didn't think it worked that way. You know, how if you ask for something you don't get to get it. I'm not sure how he got that idea into his head.). We also got him, purchased months earlier (so I had forgotten about it when I was asking C if he wanted expansion packs for his Birthday), a model rocket. When C opened it, he said brightly, "something to do with Daddy." - smart kid.

H (wrapped with Christmas tree paper, with that beautiful dragon pictured above) gave C a foam sword (one that had been living in her room for several years - left over from the great dollar store foam sword purchase of so many years ago I can't remember.).

S gave him a noisy plastic sword - bought with her own money at the dollar store. She got him the red one (rather than one in his current favorite color, blue) because it had dragons on it.

It's pretty much guaranteed to be a hit with C, if it involves dragons. Swords and dragons, and you can't miss.
