Unschooling Argument.
Aug. 13th, 2015 11:27 amMy son is an extrovert. It's kind of fascinating for the rest of this family full of introverts. He talks to almost everyone he meets. He's befriended the window washing guy at the rec center, as well as a handful of the adults who watch our karate classes.
He also collects kids to play with at every new location.
He also talks a lot. He openly shares details about himself and his life that I wouldn't be as likely to put out into public view. The other day the topic was homeschooling. I overheard him explaining to a karate parent how not only is he homeschooled, he's not in any organized homeschool learning group, and he doesn't have a structured home schedule. Effectively unschooling, but I haven't used that term around him much.
Later, C ended up in tears because of an argument with one of the boys in his karate class. Unfortunately, the boy was one C respected. The boy ended up calling C an idiot several times. They were discussing homeschooling, and C wouldn't back down when the boy insisted that the way we homeschool is illegal, because we are not a member of a homeschool group. So the boy resorted to a personal attack.
Mind you, C is 9, and the boy is 12. He probably didn't appreciate being bested by a kid three years his junior.
I didn't witness the argument, just the fallout. So after hugging him and drying his tears, I ended up explaining to C how people often end up using insults when they run out of decent arguments.
ETA: Yesterday the boy apologized to C. According to what C can remember of the exchange, the boy said that C was getting on his nerves. Ah, well, at least they made their peace.
