So we finally got this done last Wednesday.
Nice cool house now. C has thanked me repeatedly for buying us a new AC. Feels weird every time he does it. Funny, sweet, kid.
It's amazing how much more air is being pushed out our vents now. It really shows just how close to death our last one was.
We ended up going with the 4th quote (he almost didn't make the running; we were already working on setting up a second interview with the company we thought was the best of the first three when this guy finally got back to us to set up his first shot at giving us a quote). M warned him we had 3 other bids, but he said he wanted a chance at beating them. He did just that, and with a 5 ton, and a trane, and with an open window to get our AC installed in less than a week.
Oh, and I now have one of these in my bedroom ceiling, as the solution to increasing the width of the intake for the move from 4 to 5 ton.
The system on the roof runs quieter, but the increased airflow through the vents makes it sound like there is a storm outside. I also ended up sneezing a lot for the first couple of days from all the extra dust kicked out by the extra pressure.
All in all, though, it's really nice having a consistently cool house again.
