A couple weeks ago, hubby sent me a text asking me to find an evening when we were all free to go to Into the Woods. I was tired enough at the time that I misread the text and thought he was talking about going into the real woods. His company has been going through changes and one of those changes is pushing family team building experiences, so while wracking my brain as to why my husband would make such a weird scheduling request, a sense of dread descended upon me that camping was being pushed on us by his company in the name of positive team experiences.

I was fully prepared to squash that idea. BBQ and hiking are one thing, actual overnight in the wilderness....

Anyway, imaginary bullet dodged. Live musical!

To find an available evening, C and I had to skip a karate class. It was one of the days C goes in early to help with the younger kids, so he had to think about it. Every other night was taken up by glass class or H's work.

This was C's first live musical, and he is now hooked for life. We all really enjoyed the show. It was a small enough venue that we could afford second row, center, seats. We really like this production company; H, M, and I saw them do Urine Town a couple years ago. They make very good use of the space: the witch ended up in the balcony, Cinderella hid on an empty seat in the audience, the princes went searching up the stairs.

There were some changes we hadn't seen before, since our favorite version is made from a stage production recorded in the 80s.

Some of the differences were likely purely staging choices by the director of this company, but, M looked it up, and some changes had become standard in the early 2000s.

The cow was played by a human. While I was thrown off at first, it worked surprisingly well. The girl was brilliant, and possibly my favorite actor of the entire play. There was an extra song between Rapunzel and the witch. There were 3 little pigs and an extra Wolf at the end of the Wolf's song with Little Red. In one song about children, the witch made a point to go to every child or parent on the stage, including the wicked step-mother and her girls. In the final dramatic song, sung by the witch, she picked up the baker's baby and held him while she sang. Rapunzel played violin.

C tried to complement eveyone after the show, he even got to high five Little Red and the Baker. I dragged S in front of Rapunzel, because fiddles. H got a hug from the Witch and Cinderella's prince.
