Chicken, Dog Relations
Feb. 7th, 2009 01:25 pmThe other day one of our chickens escaped from the chicken/tree yard into our main yard. Luckily the dog was inside the house, so when my husband noticed the chicken she was still calmly in our yard. He tossed some weeds to the other three chickens to distract them and herded the errant chicken back through the gate. Our best guess for escape route was from climbing the ladder my husband had left in their yard after trimming some of our fruit trees.
Last night I had a dream that two of our chickens had escaped their yard. The dog was in the back yard and couldn't care less. I shooed the chickens back to their fence and they squeezed through holes in the fence. It was then I noticed how our fence had huge holes that we had patched very poorly. Funny how dreams work.
I'm glad our fence is in much better shape than in my dream, but it would be very nice if our dog could be trusted to not harass our chickens if we let them into the main yard. Though, I suppose the yard would get a little gross with droppings, and the dog would have competition for who could ruin our yard the fastest by digging holes in the dirt.
