Parasites and Sponge Bob
Mar. 19th, 2009 08:46 pmA friend of mine lent us a Sponge Bob Square Pants DVD.
Watching the show tonight demonstrated how easy it is to learn things, even from inane TV shows. One episode inspired a discussion about nematodes. Looking up nematodes led to a short explanation of parasites (I managed to google a good picture of mistletoe and some gross pictures of tapeworms - the first plant and animal examples of parasitism that came to mind.). My definition of parasites required an explanation of the word organism.
An important skill, as an unschooling parent, that I have had to develop over the years is an awareness of when I have provided my kids with enough information to satisfy their curiosity.
I now know to ask, "Have I answered your question well enough for you?". This is a necessary precaution to fight my natural tendency to be long winded in an explanation.
