A few weeks ago hubby and I were looking at berry bushes at one of the giant box stores. While initially focusing on blackberries and raspberries, a throw away comment from the hubby immediately shifted my focus.
He mentioned how currants used to be illegal in the US, and still were in some states.
Illegal plants?
Of course this piqued my interest.
After some amount of googling, I leaned about the connection between the white pine and black currants. Europe chose the currant. The US chose the pine. The federal ban lasted from 1911 to 1966. The currant is indeed still illegal to various degrees in some states.
A red and a black currant now live in my yard.
A few days ago we noticed one is growing berries!
