Family bonding over video games
May. 7th, 2009 06:39 pmH, S, C and I are all hanging out in the living room together. H is playing Zelda: Wind Waker and the rest of us are watching and cheering her on (occasionally I'll be handed the controller to do a tricky part or fight a particularly scary monster.).
I remember reading somewhere that one objection parents have to their kids playing video games is that it is divisive to the family unit. The kid is off somewhere playing and not participating in family time.
Well, twice in the last hour my kids have reflected on how nice it is we are all in the same room together (the first time we were within five feet of each other working together to make it through a particularly tough dungeon.).
Successful unschooling is often dependent upon immersing oneself in one's children's interests. Some of the funnest bits involve all of us finding common interests to explore together.
Yay gaming.
