I remember in middle school being forced to fill up a journal with poetry. I remember trying to toss said journal into the garbage can at the end of the last day of school that year. The hurt look in my teachers eyes made me pull it out again, and it got lost somewhere amongst my many possessions from childhood.

Yesterday, after a chance remark by a friend of mine, my girls excitedly asked about poetry. I explained a little about Limericks, Free Verse and Haiku (I've always liked Haiku, short sweet and clearly understandable rules).

H and S took turns the whole way home composing poetry (interspersed with C wanting to tell made up riddles). H did mostly Haiku, and S did mostly Free Verse. When I first started making my own examples of Haiku, the car was filled with cries of, "Can I make one!"

I should have written them down. If they make any more I will. I expect they will not be in a hurry to toss their poems into the garbage can at the end of the year.
