...you hope the young men at the door are just Mormons.

Rather than from the census. The area manager no less (a kid who looked to be in college, backed up by an even younger kid who looked to be barely out of high school) - I guess the poor middle aged lady they sent out to bug us before just couldn't handle the rejection.

That's all they get.

That's all they're entitled to get.

M likes to poke the bear. I'm the sort who would rather stay out of the bears awareness - not be noticed at all.

So even though I try to remain unnoticed, why do I fight the little fights (something that goes against the grain of my personal wiring and many years of school training to obey authority)? Because, if we give them the little victories - "Just a few questions, just a minute of your time." - they won't be satisfied, they'll keep trying to get more and more (and at this point we all know I'm not just talking about the census people anymore).

Because I know that even if you neither poke, nor stay invisible, and instead cooperate fully with the bear (even when he oversteps himself legally), he can still turn around and bite your head off - take your family, your livelihood, your property - no one is really safe.

Yes, we still have a lot of freedoms. Yes, I can still rant on this blog for my 14 readers to see.

However, I know we are a lot less free than 50 years ago, hell, even ten years ago (I have to provide a social security number to buy life insurance, or open a non-interest bearing bank account). Things are going to get worse, and we'll either have fewer and fewer freedoms, or the whole thing will fall apart and there'll be shooting and death (or more likely, both).

I have little kids. I really hope the slow inevitable progression to complete government control over our lives lasts long enough for me to watch them grow up, have kids of their own, and for those kids to grow up. I like to pretend the bear is going to leave me alone long enough for that to happen - it makes me twitchy when it walks onto my property and tries to stick it's nose into my home.
