I just finished reading A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire. The second in her October Daye books.

It was really good. Better than the first one (which is still worth reading, mind you). It's nice when an author can write a good book, then go on to write an even better one in the same world. With the same characters you grew to care about in the first book.

I read it over the weekend. I usually don't have time to get into a book and stay in one, but A Local Habitation was the perfect balance of interesting enough to keep me in it and light enough to let me take breaks and be able to get back into the story again without missing a beat.

When I was about twenty pages from the end, S asked me what I was reading. I told her it was basically a murder mystery with magical beings involved. She wandered away saying, "Okay, that's a new on on me." in the way only S can.

Lucky for me the third book just got released September 10th.

Off to do some shopping now.....

So far, book three has been my favorite, and not just because I made the acknowdegements, though five is shaping up to kick it to the curb.

Am I off in my count? Is there another October Daye book published besides Rosemary and Rue, A Local Habitation, and An Artificial Night (which came out Sept 7th, not 10th, oops)?

Or are you just privy to the others before they've been released?

Hee hee. I'm one of the proofers. I get to read them as they are written. (And thus, you can blame me in part for the errors that slipped through).

When is book 4 due out? Is she done with it, seeing as she's started in on #5?

I think October Daye is my new favorite sleuth.

4 is done. I think it is slated for release in March, though they may start spreading them out to once a year soon.

If you like Toby, have you tried The Dresden Files series? I've become a huge fan of Jim Butcher. I've also really been enjoying Kelley Armstrong's books (Don't let her covers fool you, they are smart, well plotted stories).

I haven't tried any of those, but I don't get much of a chance to read. Seanan's books have slipped into a rare category of I'll read them even if I don't really have the time - at least the Toby ones have - Mark has the zombie one and I haven't gotten around to that one as of yet.
