I always collect the innards for the Easter baskets slowly, throughout the year. This serves three purposes: I won't have to scramble at the last minute, the cost of outfitting three baskets is spread out, and I can sometimes find deals on items the kids will really enjoy.

The baskets, on the other hand, are a different thing entirely.

When I was a kid we had gorgeous woven baskets that were sturdy enough to re-use every year. Even though I loved that memory, I never managed to pull that off with my kids. Some years the baskets were lost or broken. Some years we just got cutesy dollar store ones on impulse. For the past several years, the kids scrounged up old baskets to use, so every one was mismatched.

This year, after noticing that H's basket was finally giving out, I decided to go the dollar store route again. At first we hit the Easter section and found three baskets that, while being a little small, would do. Then we continued shopping and stumbled across the functional basket section: the laundry baskets, garbage bins, and nick nack holders.

Inspiration struck. Baskets, with handles, not only larger than the woven Easter baskets, but sturdier and more useful long term. When we got the home, I realized we had ribbons.

There is no way this would have worked so well if I'd planned it, but stumbling into the idea was magic.
