crazychicknladyLast night M picked up a free rooster.
Goofy looking White Silkie he named Flu-Flu (after the arrow).
Today our least dominant hen (C's Goldie Feather) beat the crap out of the new rooster. She bit up his comb and made him bleed. Even after we shooed her off, Flu-Flu kept putting his head through the neighbor's chain-link fence (this kept his comb out of range when the hen was after him); we were lucky their dog didn't notice the commotion so was not around to chomp the rooster's head off.
Flu-Flu got put in the baby chicks' cage for the day, and then into the ducks' house for the night (the baby chicks - not so babyish any more at 8 weeks old - are put out in the chicken yard during the day and brought in at night). We won't have a chance to finish the $175 chicken run for the free rooster until tomorrow.
The run will be right on the border with our neighbor (as it turns out, it will be as close as we can get it to their house). We plan to put the babies in with Flu-Flu in the hopes that their youth and inexperience will lead to them bonding with him, rather than deciding to beat him up. Then he will have company, and we may end up with weird crossbreed babies some day.
